Let be a ring, a homomorphism of -algebras, an ideal of . We say that , endowed with the -adic topology, is \emph{formally smooth over} \emph{relative to} if for every -algebra (which is endowed with the discrete topology) and every square zero ideal of , every continuous homomorphism of -algebras , which lifts to a continuous homomorphism of -algebras from into , also lifts to a continuous homomorphism of -algebras from into .
a) Now prove that the following conditions are equivalent :
(i) is formally smooth over relative to for the -adic topology ; (ii) for every -derivation of into a -module annihilated by a power of , there exists a -derivation such that ; (iii) for every integer , the canonical mapping is injective and its image is a direct factor.
b) Suppose that is formally smooth over for the -adic topology. Prove that in order that be formally smooth over , it is necessary and sufficient that the canonical homomorphism be injective and that its image be a direct factor (use a) and Exercise 6 to prove that a retraction of lifts to a retraction of for every ).
