Algebra, X, p. 190
Let be a group. A -module is said to be co-induced (resp. induced) if there exists a -module such that is isomorphic to (resp. ).
a) Every -module is isomorphic to a submodule of a co-induced module and to a quotient of an induced module.
b) Let be a -module. Now prove that the following conditions are equivalent:
α) is a direct factor of a co-induced module.
β) is injective relative to (exercise 19, p. 170).
γ) There exists a -average on (I, p. 136, exercise 8), that is to say a -homomorphism
(the -module structure on being defined by
for , ) such that if is the constant function with value , one has .
c) Now prove that the following conditions are equivalent:
α) is a direct factor of an induced module.
β) is projective relative to (exercise 19, p. 170).
γ) There exists a -endomorphism of such that for every , the family has finite support and that one has
d) Let be a -module injective (resp. projective) relative to . Now prove that (resp. ) for every .
e) If is finite, now prove that the notions of induced and co-induced module (resp. projective and injective relative to ) coincide.
