Exercise 9, § 3
Topological Vector Spaces, IV, p. 60
Bourbaki marks this one as harder than the rest.
a) Let be a separated semi-barrelled space, a closed vector subspace of , the dual of . Now prove that is semi-barrelled and that the strong topology is identical with the topology induced on by the strong topology . (Note that it is sufficient to prove that a sequence in which converges to 0 for is bounded for .) Deduce that if is a space (DF), the same is true of (cf. IV, p. 63, exerc. 8). b) Let be a separated locally convex space, a vector subspace (not necessarily closed) of . Prove that if is a semi-barrelled space, the strong topology is identical with the quotient topology by of the strong topology . (Reason as in a).) c) Prove that a separated and quasi-complete semi-barrelled space is complete (use b) applied to and ). In particular a semi-reflexive semi-barrelled space is complete (cf. IV, p. 53, exerc. 6). d) Prove that the completion of a separated semi-barrelled space (resp. a space (DF)) is semi-barrelled (resp. a space (DF)). e) Let be a sequence of semi-barrelled spaces (resp. of spaces (DF)), a vector space, and for each , a linear mapping of into . Suppose that is the union of the ; prove that, for the finest locally convex topology making the continuous, is semi-barrelled (resp. a space (DF)) (examine first the case where is topological direct sum of the ). If the are semi-reflexive (resp. reflexive) and if is separated, is semi-reflexive (resp. reflexive).
