Exercise 22, § 1
Topological Vector Spaces, V, p. 64
Bourbaki marks this one as harder than the rest.
Let be a real normed space of dimension such that, for every homogeneous plane in , there exists a continuous projector of onto , of norm 1. Show that the norm on is prehilbertian. We shall reduce, with the aid of V, p. 59, exerc. 2, to the case where is of dimension 3, and we shall establish successively the following propositions: a) For every homogeneous plane in , there exists a unique continuous projector of onto , of norm 1, and the kernel of this projector is a homogeneous right , such that is a continuous bijection of the space of homogeneous planes of onto the space of homogeneous rights of (TG, VI, p. 18). b) Every point of the sphere with equation in is extremal in the ball of defined by . (Show first that, if were not extremal, its facet in (II, p. 92, exerc. 3) would be of dimension 2, by considering all the homogeneous planes passing through ; prove next that this hypothesis is contradictory, proceeding in the same way at a point of where there exists only one supporting right of in the plane generated by ; the existence of such a point may be established by using II, p. 93, exerc. 7 and p. 94, exerc. 8.) c) Every point of the sphere with equation in the dual of is extremal in the ball of defined by . (Remark first that, for every homogeneous right of , there exists one and only one homogeneous plane in such that, for every point of , the supporting plane of at this point (unique by a)) is parallel to ; moreover the mapping is continuous. Deduce from this first of all that if were not extremal in , its facet in would be of dimension at least 2, by considering all the homogeneous rights parallel to the supporting plane of at the point . Show next that this hypothesis leads to a contradiction, by considering a point of strict convexity of (II, p. 94, exerc. 8), the unique homogeneous right parallel to the supporting right of at the point in the plane generated by , and by proving that the function would not be continuous for . d) Show that, if three homogeneous planes in contain a same right , the three rights are in the same homogeneous plane (consider the unique supporting plane of at a point of intersection of and ). Applying the fundamental theorem of projective geometry (A, II, p. 203, exerc. 16), deduce that there exists a bijective linear mapping of onto such that, for every , the point belongs to the right , where is the plane with equation . Show that, for every point , the plane with equation is a supporting plane of at this point, and conclude by applying V, p. 64, exerc. 20.
