Topological Vector Spaces, V, p. 66

One says that a real normed space EE is strictly convex if all the points of the unit sphere are points of strict convexity (II, p. 93, exerc. 6) of the unit ball. Prove that, for EE to be strictly convex, it is necessary and sufficient that for every x≠0x \neq 0 in EE and every y∈Ey \in E, there exists a unique scalar α\alpha such that xx is quasi-normal to x+yx + y. (Observe that the mapping t↦∥tx+y∥t \mapsto \|tx + y\| is convex in R\mathbf{R}.)
