Topological Vector Spaces, V, p. 78
Let E be a complex Hilbert space; denote by the algebra of continuous endomorphisms of E, endowed with the usual norm . For every pair of points x, y of E, denote by the continuous linear form on , and denote by the closed subspace of the strong dual of the Banach space , generated by the . a) Show that the linear mapping which, to every , associates the linear form on , is an isometry of onto the strong dual of ; in other words, is a preDual (IV, p. 56, exerc. 23) of . The topology on is called the ultraweak topology. b) For every element of , define a linear form on by the formula for every operator . Show that is continuous, and that the mapping is an isometry of the Banach space (exerc. 14, e)) onto the Banach space (consider first the case where T is of finite rank). c) Let be the vector subspace of generated by the (so that ). Show that is barrelled (observe that a subset of bounded for is bounded for the norm topology). d) Let be the subspace of image of the set of endomorphisms of E of finite rank by the isometry defined in b). Show that is nowhere dense in and deduce that is not a Baire space.
