Topological Vector Spaces, V, p. 79

Let E be a complex hilbertian space; let B=L(E)\mathscr{B} = \mathscr{L}(E) denote the algebra of continuous endomorphisms of E, endowed with the usual norm ∥T∥=sup⁡∥x∥≤1∥T.x∥\| T \| = \sup_{\| x \| \leq 1} \| T.x \|. For every pair of points x, y in E, let ωx,y\omega_{x,y} denote the continuous linear form T↦⟨x∣T.y⟩T \mapsto \langle x|T.y \rangle on B\mathscr{B}, and let Bo\mathscr{B}_o be the closed subspace of the strong dual B′\mathscr{B}' of the Banach space B\mathscr{B}, generated by the ωx,y\omega_{x,y}. a) Show that the linear mapping which associates to every T∈BT \in \mathscr{B} the linear form ω↦⟨ω,T⟩\omega \mapsto \langle \omega, T \rangle on Bo\mathscr{B}_o, is an isometry from B\mathscr{B} onto the strong dual of Bo\mathscr{B}_o; in other words, Bo\mathscr{B}_o is a predual (IV, p. 56, exerc. 23) of B\mathscr{B}. The topology σ(B,Bo)\sigma(\mathscr{B}, \mathscr{B}_o) on B\mathscr{B} is called the ultraweak topology. b) For every element TT of L1(E)\mathscr{L}^1(E), we define a linear form ϕT\phi_T on B\mathscr{B} by the formula ϕT(S)=Tr⁡(ST)\phi_T(S) = \operatorname{Tr}(ST) for every operator S∈BS \in \mathscr{B}. Show that ϕT\phi_T is continuous and that the mapping T↦ϕTT \mapsto \phi_T is an isometry from the Banach space L1(E)\mathscr{L}^1(E) (exerc. 14, e)) onto the Banach space Bo\mathscr{B}_o (first consider the case when T has finite rank). c) Let Boo\mathscr{B}_{oo} be the vector subspace of Bo\mathscr{B}_o generated by the ωx,y\omega_{x,y} (in such a way that Bo=Boo‾\mathscr{B}_o = \overline{\mathscr{B}_{oo}}). Show that Boo\mathscr{B}_{oo} is barrelled (note that a subset of B\mathscr{B} which is bounded for σ(B,Boo)\sigma(\mathscr{B}, \mathscr{B}_{oo}) is bounded for the norm topology). d) Let FnF_n be the subspace of Boo\mathscr{B}_{oo} which is the image of the set of all endomorphisms of E of rank ≤n\leq n under the isometry defined in b). Show that FnF_n is nowhere dense in Boo\mathscr{B}_{oo} and deduce that Boo\mathscr{B}_{oo} is not a Baire space.
