Bourbaki marks this one as harder than the rest.
Let be a Banach space, a continuous linear form on the Banach space ; denote by the conjugate exponent of , by the space of numerical step functions on the -integrable sets. One can write, for , where is a continuous linear mapping from into such that .
a) Let be a finite sequence of non-negligible -integrable sets, pairwise disjoint. Prove that one has
(For every system of vectors of such that , consider the linear form on , and apply Theorem 4 of Chapter V, § 5, No. 8, to a measure of finite support.) Deduce that, if , one has (apply Minkowski's inequality).
b) For every positive function , put where runs through the set of finite sequences of -integrable sets, pairwise disjoint. Prove that is the restriction to of a positive measure with base (still denoted by ) on , such that for every positive function (use a).
c) Prove that, if is of countable type, there exists a mapping of into , scalarly -measurable, such that for every function , and that . (To establish the last equality, use Proposition 13 of § 1, No. 5 and Exercise 13 of § 1.)
d) Deduce from c) that, if is a reflexive Banach space of countable type, the space is reflexive for (apply Proposition 12 of § 1, No. 5).
