Algebraic Topology, III, p. 324

Let XX and YY be topological spaces; one says that the homotopy extension property holds for continuous mappings with target XX and source YY if, for every continuous mapping F:Y→XF: Y \rightarrow X, every closed subspace BB of YY and every homotopy σ:B×I→X\sigma : B\times \mathbf{I}\rightarrow X of origin F∣BF|B, there exists a homotopy σ~:Y×I→X\widetilde{\sigma}: Y\times \mathbf{I}\rightarrow X of origin FF which extends σ\sigma.

(a) Let XX be a topological space which is an absolute neighbourhood retract. Prove that the homotopy extension property holds for continuous mappings with target XX and source a metrizable space of countable type.

(b) Prove the equivalence of the following two properties:

(i) The space XX is an absolute neighbourhood retract;

(ii) Every point of XX possesses a neighbourhood V such that for every metrizable topological space of countable type YY, every closed subspace BB of YY, every continuous mapping of BB into V extends to a continuous mapping of YY into XX.

(c) Suppose that XX is semi-locally contractible (cf. Exercise 9) and that the homotopy extension property holds for continuous mappings with target XX. Prove that XX is an absolute neighbourhood retract. [^1]

(d) Prove that the space X=QX =\mathbf{Q} is not an absolute neighbourhood retract but that the homotopy extension property holds for continuous mappings with target XX.

[^1]: K. Borsuk constructed a semi-locally contractible space which is not an absolute neighbourhood retract, see “Sur un espace localement contractile qui n’est pas un rétracte absolu de voisinage”, Fund. Math. 35, (1948), p. 175–180.
