Algebraic Topology, III, p. 323
If X and Y are topological spaces and a set of subsets of X, one says that mappings are -close if for every point , there exists such that and belong to U; one says that a homotopy is -small if for every point , there exists such that for every .
Let X be a closed subspace of a convex subset Z of cf. exercise 8) ; suppose that X is an absolute neighbourhood retract.
a) Let be a covering of X by open subsets of . Prove that there exists a family of open and convex subsets of such that, for every open set , there exists an open set such that , and a continuous retraction of the canonical injection of X into the union V of the family . b) Let Y be a topological space and let B be a closed subspace of Y. Let be continuous mappings which are -close, let be a -small homotopy whose origin is equal to .
Prove that there exists a neighbourhood W of B in Y and a continuous mapping of the subspace of . into X such that and for every , and for every and every . Prove that there exists a neighbourhood of B contained in W such that is a -small homotopy.
c) Let be a continuous mapping such that for and in a neighbourhood of Y-W ; put

otherwise.
Prove that is continuous and that its image is contained in V.
d) Deduce that there exists a homotopy with origin , with term , and which is -small.
