Let G be a real Lie group, denote by G0 its identity component, by Z0 the center of G0 and by π0(G)=G/G0. Let (G0,p0) be a universal covering of G0, let Z0 be the center of G0 and let e be its identity element.
a) Let θ:π0(G)→ Out(G0) be the homomorphism associated with the extension E:G0→G→π0(G) (A, X, §7, Exercise 5). Prove that the cohomology class ω(π0(G),Z0,θ) of H3(π0(G),Z0) defined in loc. cit. is zero. b) Suppose that there exists a Lie group G, a surjective mapping p:G→G and an isomorphism j of G0 onto the identity component of G such that p0=p∘j. Prove that one has ω(π0(G),Z0,ψ∘θ)=0 in H3(π0(G),Z0), where ψ: Out(G0)→ Out(G0) is the homomorphism defined in Exercise 5.
c) Suppose that ω(π0(G),Z0,ψ∘θ)=0. Let E:G0→E→π0(G) be an extension of π0(G) by G0 whose associated homomorphism is equal to ψ∘θ. Prove that E/π1(G0) is an extension of π0(G) by G0 whose associated homomorphism is equal to θ.
Let then γ be the unique element of H2(π0(G),G0) such that γ⋅[E/π1(G0)]= [G] (loc. cit., e)). Consider the homomorphism δ:H2(π0(G),Z0)→H3(π0(G),π1(G)) associated with the exact sequence of abelian groups 1→π1(G0)→Z0→Z0→1 (Exercise 6). Prove that the element δ(γ) of H3(π0(G),π1(G)) does not depend on the choice of the extension E; denote it by δ(G).
d) Suppose that ω(π0(G),Z0,ψ∘θ)=0. In order that there exist a Lie group G, a surjective mapping p:G→G and an isomorphism j of G0 onto the identity component of G such that p0=p∘j, it is necessary and sufficient that one have δ(G)=0. [^1]
