Algebraic Topology, IV, p. 476
Let A be a closed subset of homeomorphic to . The extremities of A are the two points of A such that A is connected (cf. III, p. 280, th. 2); the other points of A will be called interior.
Let be a point of A; one says that A is moderate at if there exist a neighbourhood V of in and a homeomorphism of V onto the unit ball of which maps onto a segment.
a) Let be a point of A such that A is moderate at . Let be a decreasing sequence of neighbourhoods of in such that ; for every , let be a point of A and denote by the group homomorphism deduced from the injection of into . If is an extremity of A (resp. an interior point), prove that there exists an integer such that for every integer , the image of the homomorphism is reduced to the identity element (resp. is abelian).
b) Suppose that A is moderate at every point. Prove that there exists a homeomorphism of onto itself which maps A onto a segment. Deduce that A is connected and simply arcwise connected.
