Exercise 29, § 11
General Topology, I
Bourbaki marks this one as harder than the rest.
Let be a locally compact, connected and locally connected space, a closed subset of such that, for every connected nonempty open subset in are nonempty and connected. Let be a separated space, a proper local homeomorphism (exerc. 27). (a) Now prove that there exists a locally compact, connected and locally connected space , a homeomorphism of onto an everywhere dense open subset of and a proper mapping of into , such that is finite for every and that . (First observe that for every connected open set , and every connected component of , one has ; consequently, if is the cardinal of for every , has at most connected components. Deduce that for every , there are at most filters on having a basis formed of connected components of the sets , where V ranges over the set of connected open neighbourhoods of in . Let S be the set of all these filters when ranges over . Take for a sum set of and S; the neighbourhoods of a point are defined as follows: admits a basis formed of connected components C of sets , where V ranges over the set of connected open neighbourhoods of a point . For each of these sets C, consider the set of filters to which C also belongs, and the sets thus defined form by definition a fundamental system of neighbourhoods of in ).
(b) Now prove that if , and are a locally compact connected and locally connected space and two mappings having the same properties as , and , there exists a homeomorphism of onto such that and . (Use exerc. 28).
