Exercise 20, § 6
General Topology, IX, p. 124
Bourbaki marks this one as harder than the rest.
Let be two metrizable spaces. For every countable even (resp. odd) ordinal , one says that a mapping from into is Borel of class if, for every closed subset of , belong to (resp. ) (IX, p. 119, exerc. 6); then, for every open subset of , belong to (resp. ). The Borel functions of class 0 are the continuous functions. For the characteristic function of a subset of to be of class , it is necessary and sufficient that belong to . b) Let be a mapping of class from into ; prove that for every subset (resp. ), belong to (resp. ). (Reason by transfinite induction on .) c) Let be a mapping of class from into , a mapping of class from into a metrizable space ; prove that is a mapping of class . d) For every countable even (resp. odd) ordinal , let be a sequence of subsets of belonging to (resp. ) and forming a covering of ; if a mapping from into is such that its restriction to each of the is of class , then is of class . Analogous result for a finite sequence of subsets of belonging to (resp. ) and forming a covering of .
