Let $A$ be an involutive Banach algebra and $\widetilde{A}$ the algebra obtained by adjunction of a unit element. Now prove that the norm defined in No. I, p. 15 on $\widetilde{A}$ does not coincide, in general, with the norm defined by Proposition 3 of I, p. 105.
