Spectral Theories, II, p. 306
a) Let be a sequence of integers . We endow with the structure of a topological ring for which the subsets , where , form a fundamental system of neighbourhoods of 0. We denote by the completion of this ring. It is compact, metrizable and totally disconnected. If is a prime number, and if for all , we have .
b) We denote by the multiplicative group of complex numbers of the form exp(2) where and , endowed with the discrete topology. Then is an isomorphism of onto .
c) Let B be the subgroup of formed by the for ; it is discrete. We put . It is a compact metrizable connected group. (Observe that the canonical image of in is dense, and use lemma 1 of II, p. 244.)
d) Let be the additive subgroup of the discrete group formed by the rational numbers of the form where and . If , then defines a unitary character of , hence a unitary character of of the form exp(2) where . Then is an isomorphism of onto .
e) Now prove that is canonically isomorphic to , where the sequence is defined by for all .
f) Let be the group endowed with the discrete topology. Now prove that is isomorphic to where and where is the power of the continuum. (Consider a basis of as a -vector space.)
