Spectral Theories, III, p. 104

We denote by A the subring of K formed by the elements x∈Kx\in K such that ∣x∣⩽1|x|\leqslant 1; it is a local ring whose maximal ideal is formed by the x∈Ax\in A such that ∣x∣<1|x|<1.

Let I be a set and E the Banach space C0(I)(\mathscr{C}_0(I) (cf. question c) of Exercise 1). For i∈Ii\in I, denote by φi∈E\varphi_i\in E the characteristic function of {i}\{i\}. Let u∈Lc(E)u\in \mathscr{L}^c(E) be such that ∥u∥⩽1\|u\|\leqslant 1.

a) The subspace E0E_0 of the elements x∈Ex\in E such that ∥x∥⩽1\|x\|\leqslant 1 is stable by uu. b) For every nonzero ideal a\mathfrak{a} of A, the linear mapping uu defines by passing to the quotients an endomorphism uau_{\mathfrak{a}} of the A/aA/\mathfrak{a}-module Ea=E0/aE0E_{\mathfrak{a}}= E_0/\mathfrak{a}E_0. This A/aA/\mathfrak{a}-module is free and the image of uau_{\mathfrak{a}} is contained in a finitely generated submodule.

c) There exists a unique formal series fu∈A[[t]]f_u\in A[[t]] such that, for every nonzero ideal a\mathfrak{a} of A, the image of fuf_u in (A/a)[[t]](A/\mathfrak{a})[[t]] is equal to the polynomial det(1 −tua-tu_{\mathfrak{a}}) defined in A, VIII, p. 455.

d) Let v∈Lcv\in \mathscr{L}^c(E), and let c∈K∗c\in K^* be such that ∥cv∥⩽1\|cv\|\leqslant 1. The formal series fcvf_{cv} is independent of the choice of cc verifying this property.

We shall denote det(1−tv-tv) the formal series fvf_v for every c∈K∗c\in K^* such that ∥cv∥⩽1\|cv\|\leqslant 1.
