Let $u$ be a symmetric partial operator on a complex Hilbert space E. The mapping $\lambda \mapsto$ dim Ker($\lambda 1_E-u^*$), from $\mathbf{C}$ into $\overline{\mathbf{N}}$, is locally constant on the resolvent set of $u$.
