Spectral Theories, IV, p. 360

We take up the notation of the preceding exercise again.

Let μ=(μn)n∈N\boldsymbol{\mu}= (\mu_n)_{n\in\mathbf{N}} be a sequence of real numbers satisfying conditions (24). We consider the question of the uniqueness of a measure ν∈Mm(R)\nu \in \mathscr{M}_m(\mathbf{R}) such that μn=ν(xn)\mu_n=\nu (x^n) for all n∈Nn\in \mathbf{N}. We suppose that the sesquilinear form bμb_{\boldsymbol{\mu}} is separating (cf. question f) of the preceding exercise).

a) If there exists a measure ν∈Mm(R)\nu \in \mathscr{M}_m(\mathbf{R}) with compact support such that ν(xn)=μn\nu (x^n) =\mu_n for all n∈Nn\in \mathbf{N}, then ν\nu is the unique measure in Mm(R)\mathscr{M}_m(\mathbf{R}) such that ν(xn)=μn\nu (x^n) =\mu_n for all n∈Nn\in \mathbf{N}.

b) Let ν∈Mm(R)\nu \in \mathscr{M}_m(\mathbf{R}) be such that ν(xn)=μn\nu (x^n) =\mu_n for all n∈Nn\in \mathbf{N}. For every p∈C[X]p\in \mathbf{C}[X], one has p∈L2(R,ν)p\in \mathscr{L}^2(\mathbf{R}, \nu ) and ∥p∥=bμ(p,p)\|p\|=b_{\boldsymbol{\mu}}(p, p).

c) The canonical injection of C[X]\mathbf{C}[X] into L2(R,ν)\mathscr{L}^2(\mathbf{R}, \nu ) defines by continuity and by passing to the quotient an isometry of EμE_{\boldsymbol{\mu}} into L2(R,ν)L^2(\mathbf{R}, \nu ). In the sequel, we identify EμE_{\boldsymbol{\mu}} with its image, which is a closed subspace of L2(R,ν)L^2(\mathbf{R}, \nu ).

d) One has uμ⊂mxu_{\boldsymbol{\mu}}\subset m_x, where mxm_x denotes the operator of multiplication by xx in L2(R,ν)L^2(\mathbf{R}, \nu ).

e) The measure ν\nu is the spectral measure of the constant function 1 relative to mxm_x.

f) Let ν∈Mm(R)\nu \in \mathscr{M}_m(\mathbf{R}). One has ν(xn)=μn\nu (x^n) =\mu_n for all n∈Nn\in \mathbf{N} if and only if there exist a Hilbert space F and a self-adjoint partial operator vv on F satisfying the following conditions:

(i) The space EμE_{\boldsymbol{\mu}} is a closed subspace of F, and the canonical injection of EμE_{\boldsymbol{\mu}} into F is an isometry;

(ii) One has uμ⊂vu_{\boldsymbol{\mu}}\subset v;

(iii) The measure ν\nu is the spectral measure of the constant function 1∈Eμ1\in E_{\boldsymbol{\mu}} relative to vv.

g) There exists a unique measure ν∈Mm(R)\nu \in \mathscr{M}_m(\mathbf{R}) such that ν(xm)=μn\nu (x^m) =\mu_n for all n∈Nn\in \mathbf{N} if and only if the partial operator uμu_{\boldsymbol{\mu}} is essentially self-adjoint. h) Let νlg\nu_{lg} be the positive measure on R\mathbf{R} with support in R+\mathbf{R}_+ whose restriction to R+∗\mathbf{R}_+^* has density

with respect to Lebesgue measure. Let ν~lg\widetilde{\nu}_{lg} be the positive measure on R\mathbf{R} with support in R+\mathbf{R}_+ whose restriction to R+∗\mathbf{R}^*_+ has density t↦1+t\mapsto 1 + sin(2π\pi log(tt)) with respect to νlg\nu_{lg}.

We have νlg∈Mm(R)\nu_{lg}\in \mathscr{M}_m(\mathbf{R}) and ν~lg∈Mm(R)\widetilde{\nu}_{lg}\in \mathscr{M}_m(\mathbf{R}).

i) We have νlg(xn)=ν~lg(xn)\nu_{lg}(x^n) =\widetilde{\nu}_{lg}(x^n) for all n∈Nn\in \mathbf{N}.
