Exercise 10, § 2

Commutative Algebra, I, 43

(a) Let AA be a ring, II a set and RR a submodule of L=Ad(I)L = A_d^{(I)}. Let G\mathscr{G} be the set of ordered pairs (J,S)(J, S), where JJ is a finite subset of II and SS a finitely generated submodule of AdJ∩RA_d^J \cap R. G\mathscr{G} is ordered by the relation "J⊂J′J \subset J' and S⊂S′S \subset S'"; show that G\mathscr{G} is directed with respect to this order relation, that the family (AdJ/S)(A_d^J/S) is a direct system of right AA-modules with G\mathscr{G} as indexing set and that there exists an isomorphism of L/RL/R onto lim←⁡(J,S)∈G(AdJ/S)\varprojlim_{(J, S) \in \mathscr{G}} (A_d^J/S).

(b) Deduce from (a) that every AA-module is a direct limit of finitely presented AA-modules.
