Bourbaki

Exercise 15, § 2

Commutative Algebra, I, 45

Bourbaki marks this one as harder than the rest.

Let A be a ring. Show that every left A-module E which is flat and finitely presented is projective. (Given a surjective left A-module homomorphism u:F→F′′u : F \to F'', let u′u' be the homomorphism

Hom⁡(1E,u):Hom⁡A(E,F)→Hom⁡A(E,F′′) \operatorname{Hom}(1_E, u) : \operatorname{Hom}_A(E, F) \to \operatorname{Hom}_A(E, F'')

and uˉ\bar{u} the homomorphism

Hom⁡(u′,1G):Hom⁡Z(Hom⁡A(E,F′′),G)→Hom⁡Z(Hom⁡A(E,F),G), \operatorname{Hom}(u', 1_G) : \operatorname{Hom}_Z(\operatorname{Hom}_A(E, F''), G) \to \operatorname{Hom}_Z(\operatorname{Hom}_A(E, F), G),

where G is a divisible Z-module. Using Exercise 14 first, prove that uˉ\bar{u} is injective; then, with a suitable choice for G (Algebra, Chapter 11, §2, Exercise 14), show that u′u' is surjective.)
