Exercise 5, § 3

Commutative Algebra, I, 49

Let AA be a commutative ring and MM a flat AA-module containing a submodule NN which is not a flat module (cf. §2§ 2, Exercise 3). Let BB (resp. CC) be the AA-module A⊕NA \oplus N (resp. A⊕MA \oplus M) in which multiplication is defined by (a,x)(a′,x′)=(aa′,ax′+a′x)(a, x)(a', x') = (aa', ax' + a'x); then BB is not a flat AA-module, but the BB-module CC is a faithfully flat AA-module and consequently BB satisfies the conditions of Proposition 8 of no. 5.
