(a) Let AA be a ring and F\mathscr{F} and G\mathscr{G} two topologizing sets (Exercise 16) of left ideals of AA. Let G\mathscr{G}. denote the set of left ideals II of AA for which there exists a left ideal n∈Gn \in \mathscr{G} such that n/In/I is G\mathscr{G}-negligible. Show that G\mathscr{G}. is topologizing; for an AA-module MM to be F\mathscr{F}.G\mathscr{G}-negligible, it is necessary and sufficient that there exist an F\mathscr{F}-negligible submodule M′M' of MM such that M/M′M/M' is G\mathscr{G}-negligible. Show that the composition law (F,G)↦G(\mathscr{F}, \mathscr{G}) \mapsto \mathscr{G}. on the set of topologizing sets of left ideals of AA is associative.

F\mathscr{F} is called idempotent if G\mathscr{G}. G\mathscr{G}.

(b) Show that GG\mathscr{G} \mathscr{G} contains all the ideals of the form m.nm.n where m∈Fm \in \mathscr{F} and n∈Gn \in \mathscr{G}.

(c) Let KK be a commutative field and BB the ring of polynomials with coefficients in KK in an infinite system of indeterminates (Xi)(X_i) (i≥0i \geq 0). Let bb be the ideal of BB generated by the elements XiXjX_i X_j (i≠ji \neq j); let AA be the ring B/bB/b, ξi\xi_i the class mod. bb of XiX_i and mm the ideal of AA generated by the ξi\xi_i; take F\mathscr{F} to be the set of ideals containing a power of mm. Show that F\mathscr{F} is topologizing and contains the product of any two ideals of F\mathscr{F} but is not idempotent.

(d) Suppose that AA is commutative and F\mathscr{F} is a topologizing set of ideals of AA such that every ideal m∈Fm \in \mathscr{F} contains a finitely generated ideal n∈Gn \in \mathscr{G}. Show that, if the product of two ideals of F\mathscr{F} belongs to F\mathscr{F}, F\mathscr{F} is idempotent.
