Exercise 23, § 2

Commutative Algebra, II, 133

(a) Let A be a left Noetherian ring with no divisor of 0. Show that A possesses a field of left fractions (use Exercise 14 (a) to show that condition (β1)(\beta_1) of Exercise 22 (b) is fulfilled for S=A−{0}S = A - \{0\}).

(b) Let AA be a left and right Noetherian ring with no divisor of 0. Show that every finitely generated left AA-module MM, each of whose elements ≠0\neq 0 is free, is a submodule of a free AA-module. (Embed MM canonically in K⊗AMK \otimes_A M, where KK is the field of fractions (left or right) of AA considered as a right AA-module; if (xi)(x_i) is a basis of the left vector KK-space K⊗AMK \otimes_A M, show that there exists a≠0a \neq 0 in AA such that MM is contained in the sub-AA-module of K⊗AMK \otimes_A M generated by the a−1xia^{-1} x_i.)
