Exercise 27, § 2

Commutative Algebra, II, 136

(a) Let AA be a ring and MM a finitely generated faithful AA-module. Show that, if a,ba, b are two ideals of AA such that aM=bMaM = bM, the radicals of aa and bb are equal (use no. 2, Corollary 2 to Proposition 4).

(b) Deduce from (a) that, if in an integral domain AA pp is a finitely generated prime ideal, then pm≠pnp^m \neq p^n for m≠nm \neq n.

(c) Let KK be a field and AA the polynomial ring K[X,Y]K[X, Y] in two indeterminates. Let aa be the ideal AX4+AX3Y+AXY3+AY4AX^4 + AX^3Y + AXY^3 + AY^4, bb the ideal a+AX2Y2a + AX^2Y^2 of AA; show that b≠ab \neq a and b2=a2b^2 = a^2.
