Exercise 3, § 2

Commutative Algebra, II, 124

Let S=Z∗S = \mathbf{Z}^* (the complement of {0}\{0\} in Z\mathbf{Z}), pp an integer >1> 1 and MM the Z\mathbf{Z}-module the direct sum of the modules Z/pnZ\mathbf{Z}/p^n\mathbf{Z} for n∈Nn \in \mathbf{N}. Show that S−1M=0S^{-1}M = 0 although MM is a faithful Z\mathbf{Z}-module and that the canonical mapping

S−1End⁡Z(M)→End⁡S−1Z(S−1M) S^{-1}\operatorname{End}_\mathbf{Z}(M) \to \operatorname{End}_{S^{-1}\mathbf{Z}}(S^{-1}M)
is not injective.
