Bourbaki marks this one as harder than the rest.
Let be a finite group whose order is a power of a prime number and a field of characteristic .
(a) Let be a finite set on which operates (\emph{Algebra}, Chapter I, § 7, no. 2); if is the set of elements of which are invariant for all , show that (mod. ). Deduce that, if is not reduced to its identity element , the centre of is not reduced to (make operate on itself by inner automorphisms). Conclude that is solvable (\emph{Algebra}, Chapter I, § 6, Exercise 14).
(b) Let be a vector space over and a homomorphism of to . Let be the set of which are invariant under the linear mappings , where . Show that, if is reduced to 0, is necessarily reduced to 0. (If and , apply (a) to the additive subgroup of generated by the elements , where .)
(c) Let be the algebra of the group over (\emph{Algebra}, Chapter 111, § 1) and let be the vector subspace of (over ) generated by the elements where . Show that is the Jacobson radical of and that is isomorphic to (use (b) and the definition of Jacobson radical); deduce that is nilpotent.
(d) Let be a finitely generated -module and the set of elements of such that for all . Show that the following inequalities hold
() ; (**) .
(To establish (), use Corollary 2 to Proposition 4; deduce (**) by considering the dual of the vector space over .) For the two sides of the inequality () (resp. (*)) to be equal, it is necessary and sufficient that be a free -module (cf. Corollary 1 to Proposition 5).
