Let AA be a ring, which is not necessarily commutative and whose Jacobson radical mm is such that A/mA/m is a field, and MM a finitely generated free AA-module.

(a) Let M′M' be another finitely generated free AA-module and u:M→M′u : M \to M' a homomorphism such that u(M)u(M) is a direct factor of M′M'; the number dim⁡(M)\dim(M) is called the \emph{rank} of uu and denoted by rg(u)\mathrm{rg}(u). For such a homomorphism Ker(u)\mathrm{Ker}(u) is a direct factor of MM and rg(u)=dim⁡(M)−dim⁡(Ker(u))\mathrm{rg}(u) = \dim(M) - \dim(\mathrm{Ker}(u)); for uu to be injective (resp. surjective), it is necessary and sufficient that rg(u)=dim⁡(M)\mathrm{rg}(u) = \dim(M) (resp. rg(u)=dim⁡(M′)\mathrm{rg}(u) = \dim(M')). The transpose tu{}^t u is such that tu(M′∗){}^t u({M'}^*) is a direct factor of M∗M^* and rg(tu)=rg(u)\mathrm{rg}({}^t u) = \mathrm{rg}(u).
