Let KK be a field of characteristic ≠2\neq 2; consider a polynomial g(X)∈K[X]g(X) \in K[X] of even degree ⩾2\geqslant 2 with all its roots distinct (in an algebraically closed extension of KK) and satisfying g(0)≠0g(0) \neq 0. Set B=K[X]B = K[X],

A=B[Y]/(Y2−f(X)) A = B[Y]/(Y^2 - f(X))
where f(X)=Xg(X)f(X) = Xg(X).

(a) Let yy be the class of YY in AA. Show that every a∈Aa \in A may be written uniquely in the form a=P+yQa = P + yQ, where PP and QQ are in BB. Let aˉ=P−yQ\bar{a} = P - yQ and N(a)=aaˉ=P2−fQ2N(a) = a \bar{a} = P^2 - f Q^2. Show that the relation N(a)=0N(a) = 0 implies a=0a = 0; deduce that AA is an integral domain. Show that the invertible elements of AA are the elements ≠0\neq 0 of KK.

(b) Let mm be the ideal AX+AyAX + Ay of AA; show that mm is maximal and that the ideal mmm_m of AmA_{m} is generated by yy (note that X=y2/g(X)X = y^2 / g(X)). Deduce that mm is an invertible AA-module (use Theorem 1). Show that m2=AXm^2 = AX; deduce that mm is not a principal ideal of AA and that the group of classes of invertible AA-modules in the field of fractions of AA is not reduced to the identity element. (If m=Atm = At, then X=λt2X = \lambda t^2 where λ∈K\lambda \in K, whence λ−1X=P2+fQ2\lambda^{-1}X = P^2 + f Q^2 where P∈BP \in B and Q∈BQ \in B; prove that such a relation is impossible.)
