Bourbaki marks this one as harder than the rest.

Let AA be a ring, II an AA-module and BB the unique ring whose underlying additive group is A⊕IA \oplus I, AA being a subring of BB and II an ideal of zero square, whose AA-module structure obtained by restriction of the scalars is the given structure (Algebra, Chapter II, § 1, Exercise 7).

(a) Suppose that every non-invertible element of AA belongs to the annihilator of some element ≠0\neq 0 of II. Show that every element in BB which is not a divisor of 0 is invertible, in other words that BB is equal to its total ring of fractions.

(b) Let (mλ)λ∈L(m_\lambda)_{\lambda \in L} be a family of maximal ideals of AA such that every non-invertible ideal of AA belongs to at least one mλm_\lambda. Show that, if II is taken to be the direct sum of the AA-modules A/mλA/m_\lambda, condition (a) is satisfied.

(c) Deduce from (b) that, if there exists a non-free projective AA-module of rank 1, II can be chosen such that BB is equal to its total ring of fractions but there exists a non-free projective BB-module of rank 1 (this module is necessarily not invertible since BB is the only non-degenerate sub-BB-module of BB).

(d) Suppose that there exists in AA a maximal ideal mm such that, for all x∈mx \in m, there exists a maximal ideal m′≠mm' \neq m of AA containing xx. If II is taken to be the AA-module the direct sum of the A/m′A/m', where m′m' runs through the set of maximal ideals of AA distinct from mm, the corresponding ring B=A⊕IB = A \oplus I is equal to its total ring of fractions; if we write n=m⊕In = m \oplus I, which is a maximal ideal of BB, show that BB, is isomorphic to Am′A_{m'}; if AA is an integral domain (necessarily not a field by hypothesis), BB, is then an integral domain distinct from its field of fractions. If further mAmmA_m is a principal ideal of the integral domain Am′A_{m'} show that the ideal mB=m⊗ABmB = m \otimes_A B of BB is a non-free degenerate projective BB-module of rank 1. (We shall see in Chapter VII that there are Dedekind domains AA in which there exist maximal ideals mm none of whose powers is a principal ideal; for such a ring AA, all the preceding hypotheses are satisfied.)
