Exercise 25, § 5

Commutative Algebra, II, 153

Let AA be a ring and SS a multiplicative subset of AA. An ideal aa of AA is called SS-invertible if there exists s∈Ss \in S and an ideal bb of AA such that ab=Asab = As; two ideals a,ba, b of AA are called SS-equivalent if there exists s,ts, t in SS such that sa=tbsa = tb. Show that the SS-equivalence classes of the SS-invertible ideals of AA form a multiplicative group CS\mathfrak{C}_S. If SS is saturated (§ 2, Exercise 1) and no element of SS is a divisor of 0 in AA, show that the group CS\mathfrak{C}_S is isomorphic to the classes of invertible sub-S−1AS^{-1}A-modules of the total ring of fractions BB of AA (and S−1AS^{-1}A).
