Exercise 7, § 5

Commutative Algebra, II, 147

Let AA be an absolutely flat (commutative) ring (cf. § 4, Exercise 16) and let XX be its spectrum. (a) Let FF be a closed subset of XX and aa the corresponding ideal of AA (loc. cit.). Show that M=A/aM = A/a is a monogenous flat AA-module such that MM is a free AmA_m-module for all m∈Xm \in X, but that MM is projective only if FF is open. (b) Let EE be the module the direct sum of the A/mA/m, for m∈Xm \in X. Show that is a flat AA-module such that EmE_m is a free AmA_m-module of rank 1 for all m∈Xm \in X; for EE to be a projective AA-module, it is necessary and sufficient that XX be finite (note that, if A/mA/m is a projective AA-module, mm is finitely generated).
