Exercise 1, § 2

Commutative Algebra, III, 233

Let KK be a commutative field, AA the polynomial ring K[X,Y]K[X, Y] in two indeterminates and aa, the principal ideal (XYn)(XY^n) in AA; the sequence (an)n>0(a_n)_{n > 0}, forms with an=Aa_n = A an exhaustive and separated filtration on AA. Let bb be the principal ideal (X)(X) of AA; show that the topology on bb induced by that on AA is strictly coarser than the topology defined by the filtration on bb associated with that on AA (and a fortiori this latter filtration is distinct from the filtration induced by that on AA).
