Let K be a commutative field, A the polynomial ring in an arbitrary infinite family of indeterminates and m the (maximal) ideal of A generated by the . If we set , the , and the canonical homomorphisms for satisfy the conditions of Proposition 14; the ring , is the completion of with respect to the m-adic topology and the kernel of the canonical homomorphism , is equal to , the closure of in .
(a) Show that is canonically identified with the ring of formal power series in the , each of which has only a finite number of terms of given degree (Algebra, Chapter IV, § 5, Exercise 1).
(b) From now on take . Show that (consider the formal power series ).
(c) Suppose that is a finite field. Show that . (Show first the following result: for every integer , there exists an integer and for every integer a homogeneous polynomial , of degree in indeterminates with coefficients in such that , cannot be the sum of the terms of degree in any polynomial of the form , where the and are polynomials without constant term in the same indeterminates).
Deduce that is not complete with respect to the m-adic topology.
