Exercise 13, § 2

Commutative Algebra, III, 236

Let KK be a field, A=K[[X]]A = K[[X]] the ring of formal power series and mm its maximal ideal, so that AA is Hausdorff and complete with the mm-adic topology (no. 6, Corollary to Proposition 6). On the additive group AA consider the filtration (En)(E_n) such that E0=AE_0 = A and EnE_n is the intersection of mnm^n and the ring K[X]K[X]; this filtration is exhaustive and separated, the topology T\mathscr{T} which it defines on AA is compatible with the additive group structure on AA and is finer than the mm-adic topology but AA is not a complete group with the topology T\mathscr{T} (consider the sequence of polynomials (1−Xn)/(1−X)(1 - X^n)/(1 - X)).
