Let KK be a commutative field of characteristic ≠2\neq 2 and AA the ring K[[X,Y]]K[[X, Y]] of formal power series in two indeterminates. (a) Show that in AA the principal ideal p=(X2−Y3)p = (X^2 - Y^3) is prime. (If a product f(X,Y)g(X,Y)f(X, Y)g(X, Y) of two formal power series is divisible by X2−Y3X^2 - Y^3, note first that f(T3,T2)=0f(T^3, T^2) = 0 or g(T3,T2)=0g(T^3, T^2) = 0 in the ring of formal power series K[[T]]K[[T]]; assuming for example f(T3,T2)=0f(T^3, T^2) = 0, show first that f(X,Y2)f(X, Y^2) is divisible by X−Y3X - Y^3 and by X+Y3X + Y^3 and, by considering f(−Y3+X,Y2)f(-Y^3 + X, Y^2), prove finally that f(X,Y2)f(X, Y^2) is divisible by X2−Y6X^2 - Y^6.) (b) Let mm be the maximal ideal AX+AYAX + AY of AA. Show that pp is closed with respect to the mm-adic topology on AA (with which AA is Hausdorff and complete) but that in the ring gr⁡(A)\operatorname{gr}(A), gr⁡(p)\operatorname{gr}(p) is not a prime ideal (pp being given the filtration induced by that on AA).
