Exercise 25, § 2

Commutative Algebra, III, 242

Let AA be a topological ring and EE a finitely generated left AA-module. Show that there exists on EE a topology (called canonical) compatible with its AA-module structure and finer than all the others (write EE in the form Asn/RA_s^n/R, give AsnA_s^n the product topology and EE the quotient topology). If E′E' is a topological AA-module and u:E→E′u : E \to E' an AA-linear mapping, show that uu is continuous with the canonical topology on EE. If further E′E' is finitely generated and has the canonical topology, uu is a strict morphism. If the topology on AA is defined by a filtration (An)(A_n), show that the canonical topology on EE is defined by the filtration (AnE)(A_n E).
