Commutative Algebra, III, 242

Let AA be a commutative ring, mm an ideal of AA, (aλ)λ∈L(\mathfrak{a}_\lambda)_{\lambda \in L} a system of generators of mm and A^\hat{A} the Hausdorff completion of AA with respect to the mm-adic topology.

Show that, if A′A' denotes the ring of formal power series in a family (Tλ)λ∈L(T_\lambda)_{\lambda \in L} of indeterminates with only a finite number of terms of given degree (Exercise 12), A^\hat{A} is isomorphic to the quotient of A′A' by the closure bb of the ideal of A′A' generated by the T, −aλ- a_\lambda (use Theorem 1 of no. 8). In particular, the ring Zp\mathbf{Z}_p of pp-adic integers is isomorphic to the quotient Z[[T]]/(T−p)\mathbf{Z}[[T]]/(T-p).
