Exercise 4, § 5

Commutative Algebra, III, 259

Let AA be a commutative ring, 33 an ideal of AA and S=1+3S = 1 + 3. Show that, if MM is an absolutely Hausdorff AA-module with respect to g\mathfrak{g}, then S−1M=MS^{-1}M = M, in other words, for all a∈Sa \in S, x↦axx \mapsto ax is a bijection of MM onto itself. (Show first that the hypothesis that MM is Hausdorff with the 33-adic topology implies that x↦axx \mapsto ax is injective; then prove that the submodule aMaM of MM is dense in MM with the 88-adic topology and use Exercise 1 (a).)
