Exercise 7, § 5

Commutative Algebra, III, 260

Let (Aα,fμλ)(A_\alpha, f_{\mu\lambda}) be a directed direct system of Noetherian local rings; if mλm_\lambda is the maximal ideal of AλA_\lambda, suppose that, for λ≤μ,mμ=mλAμ\lambda \leq \mu, m_\mu = m_\lambda A_\mu and that AμA_\mu is a flat AλA_\lambda-module. Show then that A=lim←⁡AλA = \varprojlim A_\lambda is Noetherian and a flat AλA_\lambda-module for all λ\lambda. (If m=mλAm = m_\lambda A is the maximal ideal of AA (Chapter II, § 3, Exercise 16), show that on AA the mm-adic topology is Hausdorff, observing that AA is a faithfully flat AλA_\lambda-module for all AA. Then prove that, if A^\hat{A} is the completion of AA with respect to the mm-adic topology, A^\hat{A} is Noetherian, using § 2, no. 10, Corollary 5 to Theorem 2; finally, prove that, for all AA, A^\hat{A} is a flat AA-module using Theorem 1 of no. 2 and Proposition 2 of no. 3.)
