Exercise 8, § 5

Commutative Algebra, III, 260

Let AA be a Noetherian local ring, mm its maximal ideal and k=A/mk = A/m its residue field. Let KK be an extension of kk; show that there exists a local homomorphism from AA to a Noetherian local ring BB such that B/mBB/mB is isomorphic to KK and BB is a flat AA-module. (Consider first the case where K=k(t)K = k(t), distinguishing two cases according to whether tt is algebraic or transcendental over kk; consider next a family (Kλ)(K_\lambda) of subfields of KK containing kk, which is well ordered by inclusion and such that, if KλK_\lambda has a predecessor KμK_\mu, Kλ=Kμ(tμ)K_\lambda = K_\mu(t_\mu) for some tμ∈Kλt_\mu \in K_\lambda. Finally, apply Exercise 7.)
