Exercise 11, § 2

Commutative Algebra, IV, 292

Let AA be a ring, MM an AA-module and NN a submodule of MM. The set of a∈Aa \in A such that the homothety of ratio aa on M/NM/N is almost nilpotent is called the radical of NN in MM and denoted by rM(N)r_M(N). Show that rM(N)r_M(N) is an ideal of AA and that, for all p∈Ass⁡f(M/N)p \in \operatorname{Ass}_f(M/N), rM(N)⊂pr_M(N) \subset p. If N1,N2N_1, N_2 are two submodules of MM, then rM(N1∩N2)=rM(N1)∩rM(N2)r_M(N_1 \cap N_2) = r_M(N_1) \cap r_M(N_2); if aa is an ideal of AA, rM(aN)⊃r(a)∩rM(N)r_M(aN) \supset r(a) \cap r_M(N) and rA(a)=r(a)r_A(a) = r(a).
