Exercise 20, § 2

Commutative Algebra, IV, 294

Bourbaki marks this one as harder than the rest.

The notion of primary decomposition and that of reduced primary decomposition may be defined for any ring AA as in nos. 2 and 3 (using the notion of primary submodule defined in Exercise 12).

(a) Generalize Propositions 4 and 6 by replacing Ass by Ass, throughout.

(b) Let EE be a finitely generated AA-module and FF a submodule of EE. For every multiplicative subset SS of AA let sat⁡S(F)\operatorname{sat}_S(F) denote the saturation of FF in EE with respect to SS. Show that, if FF admits a primary decomposition in EE, every saturation of FF in EE is of the form F:(a)F : (a) for some a∈Aa \in A. (Let pip_i (1≤i≤r1 \leq i \leq r) be the elements of Ass⁡f(E/F)\operatorname{Ass}_f(E/F). Show first that, using (a), that for every multiplicative subset SS of AA there exists b∈Ab \in A such that, if TT is the multiplicative subset of the bnb^n (n≥0n \geq 0), then sat⁡T(F)=sat⁡S(F)\operatorname{sat}_T(F) = \operatorname{sat}_S(F), taking bb such that b∈pib \in p_i if pi∩S≠0p_i \cap S \neq 0 and b∉pib \notin p_i otherwise. Then prove that we may take a=bma = b^m for mm sufficiently large.)

(c) Give an example of a Z\mathbf{Z}-module EE such that {0}\{0\} is primary with respect to EE but there exist saturations sat⁡S(0)\operatorname{sat}_S(0) which are not of the form 00: (a) (cf. Algebra, Chapter VII, § 2, Exercise 3).
