Exercise 21, § 2

Commutative Algebra, IV, 294

Let AA bearing, FF a monic polynomial of A[X]A[X], BB the ring A[X]/F.A[X]A[X]/F.A[X], mm a maximal ideal of AA, k=A/mk = A/m the quotient field and F‾\overline{F} the canonical image of FF in k[X]k[X].

(a) Let F‾=∏i=1nfiei\overline{F} = \prod_{i=1}^n f_i^{e_i}, where the fif_i are distinct irreducible polynomials of k[X]k[X]. Let Fi∈A[X]F_i \in A[X] be a monic polynomial such that its canonical image in k[X]k[X] is fif_i. Let Mi\mathfrak{M}_i denote the ideal mB+Fi.BmB + F_i.B of BB; show that the Mi\mathfrak{M}_i are distinct and are the only maximal ideals of BB containing mBmB (note that B/mBB/mB is an algebra of finite rank over A/m=kA/m = k generated by the roots of F‾\overline{F}).

(b) For all ii let us write Ωi=mB+Fiei.B\Omega_i = mB + F_i^{e_i}.B. Show that the Ωi\Omega_i are Mi\mathfrak{M}_i-primary in BB and that mB=Ω1∩⋯∩Ωn=Ω1Ω2⋯ΩnmB = \Omega_1 \cap \cdots \cap \Omega_n = \Omega_1 \Omega_2 \cdots \Omega_n.

(c) For B to be a local ring, it is necessary and sufficient that A be a local ring and that F‾\overline{F} be a power of an irreducible polynomial of k[X]k[X].
