Exercise 24, § 2
Commutative Algebra, IV, 296
In a Laskerian ring A (Exercise 23), let be three distinct prime ideals such that ; let . Replacing if need be and by prime ideals contained in respectively and containing respectively and , we may suppose that is minimal in and is minimal in . Consider the ideal .
(a) Show that and for every integer ; deduce that a is not primary in A. Show that is a minimal element of .
(b) Let be a reduced primary decomposition of a in A and let be the radical of ; suppose that for for ; show that of necessity and for . Show that there exists an index such that . (Argue by reductio ad absurdum: in the opposite case, there would exist such that for all ; then and prove that this relation contradicts .)
Conclude that is a non-minimal element of ; we denote by the primary component of in which corresponds to it in the above decomposition.
(c) Let ; on the other hand let be such that and let . Show that the saturation of with respect to is a -primary ideal (show that every element of is a power in by using the fact that the saturation of with respect to is primary). Prove on the other hand that and that ; then there are two distinct reduced primary decompositions of the ideal .
