Bourbaki

Exercise 21, § 1

Commutative Algebra, V, 359

Bourbaki marks this one as harder than the rest.

(a) Let K0K_0 be a perfect field of characteristic p>0p > 0, LL the field of rational functions K0(Xn)n∈NK_0(X_n)_{n \in \mathbf{N}}, A′A' the ring of formal power series L[[Y,Z]]L[[Y, Z]], where YY and ZZ are two indeterminates, and AA the tensor product ring K[[Y,Z]]⊗KLK[[Y, Z]] \otimes_K L, where we write K=Lp⊂LK = L^p \subset L; AA is a Noetherian local ring, which is not complete and whose completion is identified with A′A' (Chapter III, § 3, Exercise 17) and AA is integral over AA. Let cnc_n denote the element

XnY+Xn+1YZ+Xn+2YZ2+… X_n Y + X_{n+1} YZ + X_{n+2} YZ^2 + \ldots

of A′A'. Let BB be the subring of A′A' generated by AA and the elements cnc_n (n≥0n \geq 0). If C=A[c0]C = A[c_0], CC is Noetherian and the ring BB (which is not integrally closed) is contained in the integral closure of CC and contains CC; but show that BB is not Noetherian (observe that cnc_n does not belong to the ideal of BB generated by the cic_i of index i<ni < n).

(b) Suppose p=2p = 2; K0,KK_0, K and LL being used with the same meaning as in (a), consider this time the ring of formal power series A′=L[[Y,Z,T]]A' = L[[Y, Z, T]] in three indeterminates, the subring

A=K[[Y,Z,T]]⊗KL, A = K[[Y, Z, T]] \otimes_K L,

and write

b=Y∑n≥0X2nTn+Z∑n≥0X2n+1Tn. b = Y \sum_{n \geq 0} X_{2n} T^n + Z \sum_{n \geq 0} X_{2n+1} T^n.
Show that the ring A[b]A[b] is Noetherian but that its integral closure B is not a Noetherian ring. (As b2∈Ab^2 \in A, every element of the field of fractions of A[b]A[b] is of the form P+QbP + Q b, where P and Q are linear combinations of a finite number of XkX_k with coefficients in the field of fractions of K[[Y,Z,T]]K[[Y, Z, T]]; for such an element to be integral over A[b]A[b], show that it is necessary and sufficient that it belong to A′A'. Show that B is generated by the elements
bi=Y∑n≥0X2(i+n)Tn+Z∑n≥0X2(i+n)+1Tnfor i≥0 b_i = Y \sum_{n \geq 0} X_{2(i+n)} T^n + Z \sum_{n \geq 0} X_{2(i+n)+1} T^n \quad \text{for } i \geq 0
and conclude the argument as in (a).)
