Commutative Algebra, V, 361

Let AA be an integrally closed but not completely integrally closed domain and KK its field of fractions; let a≠0a \neq 0 be a non-invertible element of AA for which there exists d≠0d \neq 0 in AA such that da−n∈Ada^{-n} \in A for every integer n⩾0n \geqslant 0.

Show that in the field of formal power series K((X))K((X)) there exists a formal power series ∑k=1∞ukXk=f(X)\sum_{k=1}^{\infty} u_k X^k = f(X) satisfying the equation

(f(X))2−af(X)+X=0, (f(X))^2 - af(X) + X = 0,
hence integral over A[[X]]A[[X]], belonging to the field of fractions of A[[X]]A[[X]] but not belonging to A[[X]]A[[X]], so that A[[X]]A[[X]] is not integrally closed.
