Commutative Algebra, VI, 471

Let K\mathbf{K} be a field and P the prime subfield of K\mathbf{K}; the absolute dimension of K is the number dim.al, K if P is of characteristic p>0p > 0 and the number dim.al_p K + 1 if P is of characteristic 0. Let vv be a valuation on K\mathbf{K}, hits height, rr its rational rank and kk its residue field.

(a) Suppose that the absolute dimension nn of KK is finite. Then, if ss is the absolute dimension k,r+s≤nk, r + s \leq n.

(b) Suppose further that KK is a finitely generated extension of PP. Then, if r+s=n,kr + s = n, k is a finitely generated extension of its prime field and the order group of vv is isomorphic to Zr\mathbf{Z}^r; if h+s=n,kh + s = n, k is a finitely generated extension of its prime field and the order group of vv is isomorphic to Zr\mathbf{Z}^r ordered lexicographically; finally, if s=n−1,vs = n - 1, v is a discrete valuation and kk is a finitely generated extension of its prime field.
