Exercise 15, § 8

Commutative Algebra, VI, 467

Bourbaki marks this one as harder than the rest.

(a) Let KK be a field, v1,v2v_1, v_2 two independent valuations (§ 7, no. 2) on KK and K1,K2K_1, K_2 the completions of KK with respect to v1v_1 and v2v_2 respectively. Let L1,L2L_1, L_2 be two fields such that K⊂L1⊂K1,K⊂L2⊂K2K \subset L_1 \subset K_1, K \subset L_2 \subset K_2, which are Henselian (with the extensions by continuity of v1v_1 and viv_i respectively). Let g1∈L1[X],g2∈L2[X]g_1 \in L_1[X], g_2 \in L_2[X] be two separable polynomials with the same degree nn. Show that there exists a polynomial h∈K[X]h \in K[X] which, in Li[X]L_i[X], has the same type of decomposition (Exercise 12 (c)) as gig_i (i=1,2i = 1, 2). (Reduce it to the case where g1g_1 and g2g_2 are in K[X]K[X] and are monic; consider the polynomial

ang1(X/a)+bng2(X/a)−Xn, a^n g_1(X/a) + b^n g_2(X/a) - X^n,
where v1(a)≤0,v2(a)>0v_1(a) \leq 0, v_2(a) > 0 is arbitrarily large and v1(b)>0v_1(b) > 0 is arbitrarily large.)

(b) Deduce from (a) that, if KK is Henselian with v1v_1, the algebraic closure of LiL_i is radicial over LiL_i and K2K_2 is algebraically closed (take g2g_2 to be irreducible and g1∈K[X]g_1 \in K[X] to be the product of nn distinct factors of prime degree).

(c) Deduce from (b) that, if KK is Henselian with v1v_1 and v2v_2, the algebraic closure of KK is radicial over KK.

(d) Show that, if K is Henselian with a discrete valuation v, the algebraic closure of K cannot be radicial over K and therefore K cannot be Henselian with any valuation independent of v (use Algebra, Chapter V, § 11, Exercise 12).
