Exercise 2, § 8

Commutative Algebra, VI, 461

Let K0K_0 be the field obtained by adjoining to the 2-adic field Q2\mathbf{Q}_2 the roots of all the polynomials X2n−2X^{2^n} - 2; let vv be the unique valuation on K0K_0 extending the 2-adic valuation and let KK be the completion of K0K_0 with respect to vv. Show that the polynomial X2−3X^2 - 3 is irreducible in K[X]K[X]; let K′K' be the field of roots of this polynomial and let v′v' be the extension of vv to K′K'; then

n=[K′:K]=2,e(v′/v)=f(v′/v)=1. n = [K': K] = 2, \quad e(v'/v) = f(v'/v) = 1.
